Do AI story apps keep your child's data private?

It depends entirely on the app, and apps vary far more than most parents assume. Some AI story apps write everything on-device and keep nothing on a server. Others send every prompt to a cloud service, and some keep what you type to "improve the product". The only way to know which kind you're using is to check three things: what information is collected, whether it leaves your phone (and which companies receive it), and how long it's kept. A specific, readable privacy policy should answer all three, and the App Privacy label on the App Store listing gives a quick first summary. Pay particular attention to the extras around the story itself — narration, ads and usage limits often involve different companies from the one that writes the text, and each one should be named and explained separately.
What information does an AI story app actually collect?
When you set up a story in most AI story apps, you're typically entering some combination of a child's first name, their age, a few interests, and a story idea or theme. None of that is deeply sensitive on its own — but taken together, and multiplied across however many other parents use the same app, it adds up to a real dataset about real children, and it's worth treating it that way.
What three questions should you ask any app?
- Does it leave the device at all? Some apps generate stories entirely on-device, meaning what you type never has to travel anywhere. Others send every request to a server as a matter of course. Neither is automatically wrong, but you should be able to find out which one you're using.
- If it does leave the device, who receives it, and why? A trustworthy privacy policy names the actual companies involved (not just "our AI partners") and says specifically what each one does with what it receives — writing the story text, generating narration audio, and showing ads are different things and deserve to be listed separately.
- How long is it kept? "We don't sell your data" is a much weaker promise than "we don't store your data." An app that keeps nothing once a story is delivered back to your device has far less that could ever go wrong, get breached, or get repurposed later. The UK ICO's Children's code makes the same point: collect and keep only what a feature genuinely needs.
Is "on-device by default" a realistic bar now?
Because on-device AI has become genuinely capable on recent iPhones, a growing number of apps can now generate a lot of content without ever touching a server. That makes "on-device by default, cloud only as a fallback" a realistic bar to hold apps to, rather than a compromise you have to accept. See our guide on what on-device AI means for how that actually works and which iPhones support it.
Where does your child's information go in OnceUponaBookshelf?
Here's the full picture, so you can compare it with any other app:
| What | Where it goes | When |
|---|---|---|
| Child's name, age, interests and story idea | Stays on your iPhone | Whenever your iPhone can write the story on-device |
| The same details | Cloudflare Workers AI, which writes the story and keeps nothing | Only if your iPhone can't write it on-device, and only with your permission |
| The finished story text (which includes your child's first name) | ElevenLabs, which reads it aloud | Only if you add narration |
| Your device's advertising identifier | Google AdMob, to show the short ad | Only without Remove Ads; used for personalised ads only if you allow tracking |
| Saved stories and narration audio | Only on your device | Always |
There are no user accounts. A random, anonymous device number is used to apply fair-use limits to stories written in the cloud; it isn't linked to you, your child or your Apple ID. The full breakdown is in our Privacy Policy.
